It is a regulatory requirement to evaluate the
effectiveness of risk minimisation activities. In general this
is carried out sub-optimally, often using knowledge surveys. Consequently,
the effectiveness of communications (education) in ensuring the
appropriate behaviours of patients and healthcare professionals
is not well evaluated.
Recognising this shortcoming, Pope Woodhead has
a web-based technology called ‘Safety Gauge’,
which helps in effectiveness assessments by collecting behavioural
metrics. With this tool it is possible to build intelligent electronic
prescribing checklists, treatment pathway monitoring tools and
other tools that ask users questions when unexpected behaviours
are observed. Safety Gauge provides an anonymous
real-time evaluation of risk minimisation tool use and user supplied
rationales behind unexpected behaviours. These can be used to
inform and support the design of improved risk minimisation activities
and tools.
